May, 2000

Dear Society Members:

Greetings from the Land of Enchantment! I hope that this newsletter finds you well. Here is a brief update of Society activities.

Society Symposium at USCAP

The Symposium in New Orleans demonstrated the continued success of your Society in attracting a large audience and a stimulating discussion. The breadth of the topic of histiocytic and dendritic cell neoplasms was well covered by Elaine Jaffe, Larry Weiss, Tom Grogan, Ron Jaffe, Roger Warnke and Diane Farhi. I thank each one of them for their excellent presentations!

Annual Business Meeting

At the annual Business meeting in New Orleans we had the opportunity to thank Nancy Harris for her 2 years of excellent service to the Societv and endorse Jim Vardiman for Vice President, Steve Swerdlow for Secretary-Treasurer, and John Cousar, Norm Levy, and Peter Isaacson as Members at Large. Peter will serve as EAHP's member on our Societv Executive Committee.

Pathologist-in-Training Award

The pathologist in Training Award for 2000 was given to Dr. Keith Izban for his proffered paper entitled "The determination of active NF-KB p65 (Rel A) in Hodgkin Reed- Sternberg cells from patient tissue samples of classical Hodgkin's disease". Please join me in congratulating Keith for receiving this award for 2 consecutive years. Also, I would like to recognize the many excellent posters and proffered papers that were entered in this competition. The Awards Committee had the opportunity to judge over 40 abstracts and we were impressed by the quality of these submissions. Many of our Society members were mentors for these trainees.

Society for Hematopathology Companion Meeting with ASCP/CAP

The upcoming Society for Hematopathology Companion meeting held in conjunction with ASCP/CAP will be Friday October 13th in San Diego (see enclosure). I would like to thank LoAnn Peterson and Phuong Nguyen for organizing an excellent group of speakers on the impact of the new WHO classification on practicing pathologists.
